2022 Ford Explorer
The Ford Explorer is a versatile SUV that serves as a capable family hauler and a fun-to-drive adventure seeker. The 2022 model gains an ST-Line trim with exterior updates and a new engine along with ST-Line badging. Ford also made some equipment changes to the ST,, and the King Ranch and Platinum have more horsepower than before.
Trim Levels (Exterior)
The base Explorer comes with LED headlights and a power liftgate, while just a bump to the XLT gets you roof rails, chrome exterior trim, and LED lighting. The ST-Line has 20-inch wheels, a black grille, and tinted headlights and taillights. Step up to the upscale Limited for roof rack side rails, a silver-painted mesh grille insert, and dual chrome exhaust tips.
The off-road-ready Timberline has an upgraded suspension, all-terrain tires, skid plates, and front tow hooks, and the performance-based ST has a sport suspension. Stepping up to the King Ranch builds on the Limited with 20-inch 10-spoke alloy wheels and upgrades in the cabin. For 21-inch wheels, satin aluminum exterior trim, and a unique front grill, go with the Platinum trim.

Engine (Power)
The base powertrain for the 2022 Explorer is a 2.3-liter four-cylinder gas engine that puts out 300 horsepower. All trims except the Timberline come standard with rear-wheel drive and offer all-wheel drive. Choosing the Timberline means you get all-wheel drive as a standard feature. Power for the ST, King Ranch, and Platinum comes from a 3.0-liter turbo V-6 engine with 400 horsepower.
Performance
Either engine easily propels the Explorer, whether you head out on the highway or up a mountain road. The 10-speed automatic transmission easily finds the right gear, and when equipped, the Explorer can tow up to 5,600 pounds.
Interior
The 2022 Explorer comes standard with three rows of seats and room for seven. Opt for the available second-row captain's chairs, and they come with a sliding function that allows them to slide back and open up 39 inches of legroom. Even the base has a power-adjustable driver's seat and tri-zone automatic climate control, but you can get a leather-wrapped steering wheel and heated front seats by bumping up to the XLT. The higher trims also have ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and leather upholstery.
The tech in the 2022 Explorer starts with an 8-inch touch screen, SYNC 3, a Wi-Fi hot spot, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and several USB ports. The Limited gains a 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen stereo and wireless charging, and the King Ranch and Platinum have a 10.1-inch touch screen. The Platinum also adds a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster.

Safety Features
Every Explorer comes standard with several advanced driver aids. These include frontal collision warning with mitigation, a blind-spot monitor with rear-cross traffic alert, a trailer sway control feature, and lane-keep assist. The ST-Line adds a surround-view camera, adaptive cruise control, and evasive steering assist, while the Limited and up come with Ford Co-Pilot360 Assist+ with speed sign recognition and full-speed adaptive cruise control. The King Ranch adds rear automatic braking. Bump up to the Platinum for an automated parking system.
