Callaway’s Coffee and Bistro
Callaway’s is one of the most popular spots in town, with great food and music, friendly owner and staff, and plenty of options for all your coffee needs. They even have great dairy-free choices.
The coffee here is simply amazing. These are choice beans, roasted, ground, and prepared with skill. The pastries are also excellent. You can also get an amazing burger here and good salads! Try their iced coffee and one of their signature drinks, like the French Kiss and the Marilyn Monroe.
Thrive Cafe
Thrive is another popular local spot that opens at 9 am each day: but do note that they’re closed on Mondays and Fridays. The people who work here are as nice as can be, the coffee is fresh and delicious, and they have an interesting mix of freshly made lemonades for anyone who doesn’t want caffeine.
They also have some great teas, an excellent chai latte, and hot chocolate you’ll love. The menu is simple, clear, and easy to navigate: just tell them what drink you want and what you want in it!
Van Zandt Coffee
This veteran-owned and operated business was started by a man whose passion for good coffee began at West Point and led him, after leaving the service, to cross the country in search of all the training he needed to provide people with the absolute perfect cup of coffee. The goal here is that the coffee be so good you’ll want to drink it black.
Now, here’s the catch: Van Zandt does not have a cafe. You can order their coffee online, visit them to pick up a bag, or get their coffee at some local stores. So why did they make our list? The coffee is just that good. Once you try Van Zandt, you may never visit a coffee shop again: everything else will taste alkaline and chalky. Unfortunately, no local Athens coffee shops have yet picked up on Van Zandt. To get it brewed for you in a shop, you have to go to Canton.
Cherry Laurel Bakery, Cafe & Catering
If you live life on the sweet side, stop in here, where two best friends transformed an old house into a lovely cafe and restaurant and serve up the best desserts, pastries, and coffee shop experience in the city, using family recipes.
