Well, the great thing about Texas is that you can have both at the same restaurant. With that in mind, we made a list of the best breakfast places in and around Athens, TX.
1. Athens Cafe
Our first spot for breakfast in Athens is the appropriately named Athens Cafe. This straightforward, no-nonsense cafe delivers on all the hits of the traditional American breakfast. Whether it’s their pancakes hot and fluffy right off the griddle, the biscuits and gravy, or the chicken-fried steak with home fries, they are serving up consistent quality. Their omelets are made to order and skillet tossed.
The biscuits are light and flaky, and the eggs come any way you want. Stop by on the weekend for their breakfast buffet. They also cook up classic Mexican breakfast dishes as well.
2. Callaway’s Coffee & Bistro
Our next place is for those looking for a relaxed atmosphere. Callaway’s is a hidden gem of a coffee shop. Tucked away in a residential area, it’s exactly what you’d hope for in a small-town cafe and bistro. Their signature gourmet coffees are prepared with a stellar standard of service.
They also have many syrup flavors including several sugar-free options. Try one of their breakfast sandwiches served up all day on buttery croissants or homemade bread and you won’t be disappointed. The “Big Chief” breakfast sandwich is a favorite with the locals. And if you stick around for lunch, you can try their award-winning burger.
3. Cherry Laurel Bakery, Cafe & Catering
Serving up breakfast and lunch six days a week Cherry Laurel offers a stellar menu of sandwiches, soups, and salads. Founded in 1990 by Bonnie Wilson and Linda Ingram, Cherry Laurel quickly won over locals with its unique and casual dining experience. They then expanded into a bakery quickly becoming a staple in the region for quality desserts and cakes. Their Butterum cake is one of many desserts that keep customers coming back for more. In recent years they’ve also expanded into catering where they continue to deliver for their customers.
4. Texas Cafe Athens
Our next spot is another great choice for those looking to please everybody. The Tex-Mex breakfast offers the classic Tex-Mex dish enfrijoladas, which are three corn tortillas filled with Mexican-style eggs, smothered in refried beans, and topped with cheese. If you’ve never had it, we can’t recommend it enough. Texas Cafe also offers up the traditional American breakfast menu cooked to order, made-to-order skillet omelets, as well as a breakfast buffet. The service is friendly and the atmosphere is relaxed. Definitely pay them a visit.
5. Donut Supreme
Our last spot deserves an honorable mention. Known as more of a donut shop and rightfully so because the donuts are great, Donut Supreme also offers up some savory breakfast options as well. Their pigs-in-a-blanket and breakfast sandwiches are a great option for those in need of a quick and easy breakfast stop. Their apple fritters and donut holes are also delicious.
