There’s plenty of wildlife here too, and even an onsite museum, the Wofford House Museum, where visitors can experience early Henderson County life in this historic 1850s home, featuring period furnishings and memorabilia.
3. School Pride
Athens has its very own top-notch high school. Athens High provides great educational opportunities for local youngsters, and it’s also a leader in cultural activities too and is known for winning numerous state titles with its competitive debate teams.
As with any small Texas town, there’s a lot of support for the football team, too. When the Athens High Hornets take to the field, they can be sure of plenty of cheering from the local community!
4. Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center
Another great attraction right here in Athens is the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center. With huge aquariums displaying native fish, alligators, amphibians, and other watery creatures, it’s a great way to learn about the natural world and a favorite with families.
The center is open 9am to 4pm Tuesday through Saturday and 1pm to 4pm on Sundays. There’s a visitor center and plenty of onsite parking.
5. Cedar Creek Reservoir
If you love fun on the water, Cedar Creek Reservoir is the place for you. You can enjoy boating on the water, bird watching, or try water sports.
The most popular activity here is fishing. The reservoir is well stocked with a wide variety of fish, including catfish, bass, and crappie.
6. Great Places to Eat and Drink
Hungry? There’s sure to be something to your liking right here in town. Along with the usual national chains, there are some great local eateries, offering down-home classics and fare from around the world.
If you’re after a coffee and some light lunch, try the Railway Café. Another favorite with locals is Rounders Pizza. Serving delicious, homemade food in a retro diner atmosphere, it’s just one example of the businesses that embody Athens’ strong sense of community.
