One of the first things you will want to do after getting the keys of your new 2022 Ford Maverick is hitting the road and taking your family on an exciting adventure. Whether you are thinking of having a picnic in a scenic spot or going on a challenging hike, here are three state parks you can easily reach by car from Athens, TX.

1. Purtis Creek State Park

A beautiful lakeside reserve offering hiking, biking, boating, and fishing opportunities, Purtis Creek State Park is a well-known spot among residents of Athens and other cities in the region. Open to the public year-round between 8:00 am and 10:00 pm, this state park is located about 15 miles northwest of the Athens city center, making it possible to reach it in less than 20 minutes by car via route US-175.

Purtis Creek State Park encompasses an area of about 1,600 acres across the counties of Henderson and Van Zandt. Visitors aged 13 and older must pay a $5 entrance fee to use the facilities of this nature reserve, which include well-equipped picnic areas, boat launching ramps, and several miles of hiking trails. A large family campground is also available in the area.

2. Fairfield Lake State Park

Encompassing nearly 1,500 acres of green areas around the shores of a 2,400-acre lake, this state park is another wonderful destination for a day trip. Created in 1976 and featuring several historical attractions, Fairfield Lake State Park is located less than 50 miles southwest of downtown Athens and can be reached in a little under one hour by car via route FM 59.

Managed by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, Fairfield Lake State Park offers nature programs led by local instructors, as well as plenty of modern facilities for water sports enthusiasts. Some of the amenities you can find here include a protected swimming beach, a fishing pier, two public boat ramps, and a large campground with nearly 140 sites.

3. Lake Tawakoni State Park

Located about 50 miles north of Athens, Lake Tawakoni State Park boasts about 375 acres of prairies and woodlands and offers great opportunities for outdoor recreation. This nature reserve was established in 2002 and became famous just five years later after a massive communal spider web was discovered on its premises. This place is a fantastic spot for swimming, boating, and fishing in the waters of Lake Tawakoni.
